Double-Glazed Units

A double-glazed unit makes up the majority of a PVC window. It’s a block composed of two or more sheets of glass sealed together. The quality of the entire window depends on the characteristics of this unit. The space between the panes is called a chamber, and the number of chambers in the frame and the double-glazed unit are two different things.

In residential homes, a three-chamber profile with a two-chamber double-glazed unit is common. The chambers are filled with a noble gas, usually argon, to improve thermal and sound insulation, preventing dust or dirt from entering. The panes are separated by spacer bars filled with desiccant to absorb moisture.

01
Number of Chambers. Between each pair of glass panes is a space called a chamber, resulting in single-chamber, double-chamber, etc., configurations.
02
Thickness. The thickness of a double-glazed unit is the combined thickness of the glass and air portions. They come in various sizes like 24, 32, 36, 42, or 44 mm.

Double-Glazed Unit Form Factors

Single-Chamber Double-Glazed Unit

Single-chamber units consist of two glass panes separated by a spacer bar. Typically, the glass thickness is 4 mm, with a 16 mm spacer in between, resulting in a total unit thickness of 24 mm (4-16-4). These are among the most commonly used units in Ukraine, often referred to as basic.

Double-chamber units have three glass panes and two spacer bars. These are recommended for residential spaces, schools, hospitals, and other buildings with high energy-saving and noise reduction needs.

Double-Chamber Double-Glazed Unit

Triple-Chamber Double-Glazed Unit

Composed of four glass panes separated by spacer bars, creating three chambers filled with either air or inert gas. The triple-chamber units are visually distinguished by their increased thickness.

Energy-Efficient Glass and Thermal Insulation

Energy-efficient glass (Low-E glass) is used in double-glazed units that feature a coating of metal ions across the entire surface, which protects it from infrared rays. This coating helps the unit reflect heat back inside during winter and blocks heat from the outside during summer. The coating is made of very thin layers applied to the glass, with only a slight impact on transparency.

A single-chamber unit with energy-efficient glass retains heat better, is cheaper, and much lighter—reducing stress on sash hardware and extending the system’s lifespan compared to a double-chamber unit with regular glass.
